The Continent in the Coffee

From my forthcoming collection “On Square Routes”:

The Continent in the Coffee

I pressed the plunger down that morning

Into half a litre of diluted finest Italian ground beans

Imported from Brazil, Asia…and Africa

I felt the pressure alright

And suddenly it appeared

A dark continent surrounded by an ocean of froth

A one-off big bang event, one in a million

That not even a hundred men or more could ever do

Primeval steam rising from the surface

A dark liquid almost literally descending a mountain

From Atlas to Table

And ending up on my kitchen table

From Algeria to Zimbabwe

The continent where human life began enclosed within a cup

I’ll bless the rains down there
